Generation 3

Generation 3  Children of Peter Martin EDDINS and Sarah Jane TRAWICK:

Bessie Lillian EDDINS was born on 09 November, 1890 and died 03 December, 1890.

George Martin EDDINS, Sr. was born on 31 December, 1891 in Wallace, Alabama and died on 18 January, 1990 in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida. He married (1) Clara Mae JACKSON on 15 April, 1916 in Milton, Florida. Clara Mae, the daughter of Dallas JACKSON and Novella ?, was born on 02 March, 1898 in Fayetteville, North Carolina and died 20 May, 1949 in Pensacola, Florida. He married (2) Lille Belle COPE on 20 October, 1949 in Pensacola. Lillie Belle was born on 01 April, 1899 and died 01 May, 1966 in Pensacola. He married (3) Alice Rosalyn VARNES on 04 October, 1966 in Pensacola. Alice was born 12 September, 1899 in Lake City, Florida and died 01 February, 1994 in Pensacola, Florida.
George's early life is somewhat of a mystery: however, it may be assumed to have been normal for the times. George went to school (thru the 6th grade) in a one room log schoolhouse. All six grades were taught by the same teacher at the same time. There were approximately 85 students in George's school.
In 1900 George suffered his first loss by death. His father, who worked for the L&N Railroad, was working at a train wreck. Due to poor weather he contracted pneumonia and died. George's mother had a family to raise so she remarried.
George didn't get along with his step-father at all. After an incident in which George pulled a gun on his step-father, life at home became impossible. George hopped the train to Pensacola, FL, where his Uncle Robert Eddins lived. George was the ripe old age of 11.
After arriving in Pensacola, George asked for directions to the Police Station in order to find out where his Uncle lived. The train station attendant asked him if he was looking for work and he said yes. He was taken to see Mr. Ariel McCaskill, the Chief Train Dispatcher, who hired George as a messenger boy. George stayed on that job until he was 13. (author's note: Did he ever find his Uncle Robert? Where did George live during these years?)
In 1904, when George was 13, he was offered a job as "butcher boy" by Mr. Wolf. A "butcher boy" sold various things such as newspapers, fruit, candy, sodas, etc. to passengers on the train.
George worked as a butcher boy for about six months. He was an industrious youth, hard working, so he was offered a job by Uncle Billy Martin ( who's uncle?) as timekeeper and track layer. He learned quickly and by the time he was 18 he had become a crew manager.
It was about 1909 when he met "Big" Tom Hayes, a Carpenter who had a shop on Gregory street. Mr. Hayes gave George a set of "Audells" books on carpentry. It was to generate an interest in carpentry for George, and set the stage for a future occupation. George signed up for a correspondence course in carpentry, which he took while employed by the Railroad.
In about 1916 George was sent on a track-laying trip to Fayetteville, North Carolina. It was there that he met a young lady named Clara Mae Jackson. They had only known each other for about six weeks when the job was finished and he was transferred back to Florida to build a spur track. Although they had only been together for a short time, George knew this was the woman he wanted to be his wife. He couldn't afford to chance losing her so, immediately after he got to his new job site, he sent her some money to come meet him in Milton, Florida so they could get married. They were married in Milton on 15 April, 1916.
Clara Mae JACKSON was born at Cedar Creek, a suburb of Fayettville, North Carolina. Clara, along with her father, mother, and a younger sister, were reported on the 1900 Census for Cumberland County, NC, Beaver Dam township. Her parents were reported as having been married for 3 years, and all were reported as being born in North Carolina. The census reports: JACKSON, Dallis (sp?), head, b. May 1872, age 28; Novella, wife, b. May 1878, age 22; Clara M., dau, b. Mar 1898, age 2; and Eliza S., dau, b. Feb 1900, age 3/12.
Married track supervisors were provided with boxcars to live in when on the road. George and Clara were provided with two boxcars - one for a living room and one for a bedroom.
George's track-laying job took him all over the Northwest Florida region. From Munson, Florida they were sent to Parker Springs, AL. It was here that their first child was born, on 11 March, 1917. They named him after his father - George Martin Eddins, Jr.
After George's contract with the Railroad was up, they decided the Railroad required them to move around too much. They moved back to Pensacola to settle down and raise their family. George fell back on his previous training and became a carpenter. He took a course in circular stair building, and was for a time the only certified circular stair builder in Pensacola.
George and Clara had another child, Carrie Mae, born in 1919 in Pensacola. It is not known if George was still with the Railroad at this time. Another child, a son, named Valford Rupert, was born on 11 April 1921 in Bonifay, FL, followed by Ronald Hixon on 29 September 1923, born in Jacksonville. It may be assumed George was working in construction at that time because later, in 1924, they went to South Florida to build houses.
In 1924-1926 they went to the South Florida area to build houses. While there George, Sr. built a home for Al Capone at Key Biscayne, FL. Times were tough and money was tight. Christmas of 1925 was going to be a dissapointment for the children. On Christmas eve a truck came and delivered a box of presents for the kids - yes, from Al Capone. Vernon Lionel, born 10 July 1925, was just a boy then.
          In 1934, Gordon was born.
In 1939 they moved to the house on Green Street in Brownsville, Florida, where they lived out their lives.
They had previously lived at: 1021 E. Gadsden St. Grandma Hines (?) lived on Gregory St. then. They also lived at 427 Intendencia St., 527 E. Government St., and 531 E. Government St, in the last house on the Bay.
Clara Mae JACKSON-EDDINS passed away on 20 May, 1949 in Pensacola, Florida. She was laid to rest in Bayview Memorial Cemetery. Her tombstone reads: "CLARA M. EDDINS MAR 2, 1898 - MAY 20, 1949.
George didn't wait too long to remarry. After all, he has sons at home and they needed someone to care for them. He married Lille Belle COPE on 20 October, 1949 in Pensacola.
George and Belle lived for many years together, raising their children and helping them get off to a good start in life. Lillie Belle COPE-EDDINS passed away on 01 May, 1966. Once again, George was faced with remarrying.
Alice Rosalyn VARNES was a native of Lake City, Florida; however, she had been a resident of Pensacola most of her adult life. Family notes indicate a possible birthdate of 19 Sep, 1899. She was a member of Richards Memorial United Methodist Church. Alice had three daughters and 2 sons from her previous marriages: Her daughters were Sybil STRAIGHT, Louise BARNES and Jean LAMOLINARA. Her sons were Ralph WYSE and Silas A. DIXON.
George Martin Eddins, Sr. died at 10 pm. on Jan 18, 1990, just 18 days after his 90th birthday. His funeral was held on 22 Jan 1990 at Faith Chapel. He was buried in Bayview Memorial Cemetery. His tombstone reads: "GEORGE MARTIN EDDINS, SR. DEC 31 1891-JAN 18 1990."
Alice passed away on 18 January, 1990. Her funeral was held at 1:30 pm on Friday, 4 Feb 1994 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home, the Rev. David Land officiating. Alice was buried in Union Hill Cemetery.

Carrie Amelia EDDINS was born on 27 June, 1895 in Wallace, Alabama and died 27 October, 1968. She married Charles H. MENNEN in about 1925. He was born in about 1885.
The 1930 census reports Charles H. MENNEN with his wife, Carrie. Charles was a male, age 42, married at age 37, born in New York. His father was born in Holland and his mother in Germany. Carrie, a female, was age 31, married at 27, and she, along with her parents, was born in Alabama.
The 1945 Florida State census reports a Carrie MENNEN residing with Mamie McCANDLESS at 2001 West Gregory Street in Pensacola, Florida. Mamie was Carrie's sister. Carrie was age 49 and preforming clerical duties for a living. Mamie was 49, working as a packer. It is assumed that their husbands, who were serving in the military, were both off serving in WW-II. Charles was a soldier in the US Army.

Mamie Geneva EDDINS was born on 09 November, 1897 in Wallace, Alabama. She married (1) Jefferson Julius GENTRY on 03 July 1914. She would only have been about 17 years old at the time, so it is not unusual that trhe marriage didn't last. She married (2) Guy D. McCANDLESS in about 1924. He was born in about 1902 in Pennsylvania.
The 1945 Florida State census reports Mamie, age 47, living with her sister, Carrie MENNEN, at 2001 West Gregory Street in Pensacola, Florida. Mamie was working as a packer for a living. Mamie's husband, along with Carrie's husband, can be assumed to have been off serving in WW-II at the time.

Child of Mamie Geneva EDDINS and Guy D. McCANDLESS is:
                              i. Mildred A. McCANDLESS, b. abt. 1925, FL.

Mollie Belle EDDINS was born 09 February, 1900 in Alabama and died 29 May, 1921. She married Frederick BARTER.

Generation 4

Generation 4  Children of George Martin EDDINS, Sr. and Clara Mae JACKSON:

George Martin EDDINS, Jr. was born on 11 March, 1917 in Parker Springs, Alabama and died on 28 July, 1991 in Pensacola, Florida. He married (1) Elizabeth Ann BURKE in about 1940 in Pensacola, Florida. Elizabeth Ann BURKE was born in about 1925 and died about 1995. He married (2) Johnnie Pearl DAVIS on 06 March,1944 in Pensacola, Florida. Johnnie Pearl DAVIS, the daughter of John Henry DAVIS and Pearl Creary COLLINS, was born on 04 July, 1924 in Forrest Hills, Louisiana and died 22 January, 2007 in Pensacola, Florida.
George Martin Eddins, Jr. (known as George, Jr.) was born in Parker Springs, Alabama. George, Jr. weighed 10 lbs 11 oz at birth. His father was a Railroad Superintendent and was laying track in the area. Parker Springs was not a town, but a water supply area for the trains. George's father and mother lived in two boxcars that were provided to them by the railroad for shelter while on track-laying duty. George, Jr. was born in one of the boxcars. His delivery was accomplished by Dr. Olin Oliver Enzor, who coincidentally would become a relative of George Jr.'s second wife, Johnnie Pearl Davis.
George Jr. was a well behaved, serious minded boy. The only record of arrest or conviction was an incident on 1 Jan 1934, when he was 16 years old. He was arrested for shooting fireworks in the downtown Pensacola business district. The case was dismissed in City Court.
George Jr. began his career in Aviation at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola in 1938. He spent his entire career there except for his brief military service.
George Jr. married Elizabeth Ann BURKE about 1942. He and Elizabeth Ann had one child, a daughter named Patricia Ann (Patsy). This marriage did not work out and they were divorced on 8 July 1942.
George Jr. married Johnnie Pearl Davis in 1944. They had met while George Jr. was driving an ambulance for Waters & Hibbert funeral home and Johnnie Davis was attending nursing school. It would coincidentally show they had more in common than first imagined: George Jr.'s father, George, Sr. had worked for the railroad when George, Jr. was born. Years later it would come out in a conversation with George Sr. that the doctor that had delivered George Jr. was Dr. Olin Oliver Enzor, a relative of Johnnie Davis'. That was shortly before Dr. Enzor moved to Burkeville, TX.
Johnnie Pearl DAVIS (Johnnie) was born on Independence Day, July 4, 1924, in Forrest Hills, Louisiana. The 1930 Census for Grant County (?), Louisiana, Ward 2; Enumeration District 22-5; Supervisor District 5; Sheet 1B shows a John H. (Henry) DAVIS, white male, head-of-household, renting at $4.00 per month, not living on a farm. He was 33 years old in 1930, 21 at marriage. He did not attend any schools in 1929-1930, but could speak, read and write english. He was born in Alabama; his father and mother both born in North Carolina. He was employed in a Gravel Pit as a Steam Shovel Engineer. He was not reported as having been a veteran. His wife, Pearl C. (Creary) DAVIS, was a white female, 31 years old; 19 at marriage. She wasa born in Florida; with both her father and mother born North Carolina. Johnnie P. (Pearl) DAVIS, daughter, white female, age 6, was born in Louisiana, with father born in Alabama and mother born in Florida; and Kathleen, daughter, white female, age 3, was born in Louisiana. Johnnie lived in Louisiana throughout her early teens, attending Rosepine High School in Rosepine, Louisiana. She graduated from there on 20 May, 1942.
George M. EDDINS, Jr. enlisted in the U.S. Army on 5 Sep 1946 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia. His service number was RA 14-147-169. His education level was reported as four years of high school and his marital status was "married." His last assignment was with the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM with work assignments on the Manhattan Project. He was separated on 15 February, 1948 with the rank of Technician Fifth Grade (TEC 5).
George Jr. and Johnnie Pearl had four children together; one girl (Barbara Lea) and three boys (Ronald Hilton, Gary Lynn, and Stephen Lane).
George Jr. retired from Civil Service at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, FL in 1972 after 34 years faithful service (1938-1972).
George Jr. died at age 74 from complications arising from Aortic Aneurism surgery, compounded by cancer of the lungs. His military service qualified him for burial at Barrancas National Cemetery located on Pensacola Naval Air Station, the place where he had spent most of his adult life. It was fitting that he would also spend eternity there. His funeral was held on 31 July, 1991, and was managed by Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home, Pensacola. His tombstone reads: "GEORGE MARTIN EDDINS, JR. TEC 5, U.S. ARMY WORLD WAR II MAR 11, 1917- JUL 28, 1991."

Obituary column in the Pensacola News Journal Tuesday, July 30, 1991:

The world-reknowned square and round dance teacher and choreographer died Sunday. He was 74. Mr. Eddins, a Pensacola native, was instrumental in organizing and promoting square and round dancing locally, his friends and relatives said."

Bessie was born on 19 August, 1924 in Mobile, Alabama and died 03 February, 2008 in Gulf Breeze, Florida. A Family Bible obtained after George M. EDDINS, Sr's death gives Valford's middle name as "Roderick." However, Valford states it is now and has always been "Rupert." It is possible that they had several names in mind and wrote "Roderick" when filling out the bible, but gave "Rupert" to the official at the hospital.

Ronald Hixon EDDINS was born on 29 September, 1923 in Jacksonville, Florida and died 20 May, 1945 on Tinian Island, Pacific Theater of Operations. He married Helen Lee MONDEAU in 1942 in Pensacola, Florida. Helen, the daughter of Frank MONDEAU and Bessie ?, was born about 1927 in Florida. The Florida Marriage record Book states Ronald Hixon Eddins was married in 1942 in Escambia County, FL; Book Nr. 741, Certificate Nr. 37207.
Ronald's birth place was listed in family notes as Jacksonville, Florida. However, a family Bible says Pensacola.
The U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records for 1938-1946 indicate Ronald H. (Hixon) EDDINS, Army Serial Number RA 14-057-377 was born in 1923 in Florida, resided in Escambia County, Florida, and enlisted on 31 Jan 1943 at Miami Beach, FL. Florida. He enlisted in the Air Corps as a Private. His enlistment was for the duration of the War plus six-months. His education was 4 years of high school, and his civilian occupation was Machinist's Helper. Of significance is the fact that he enlisted as "single, without dependents." As he had been married in 1942, it is not known whether he had divorced or simply lied on his enlistment record.
Upon graduation from flight school, in March of 1945, Ronald received his assignment orders for the 1st Army Air Force Bomber Squadron, 9th Bomber Group. He joined his group on Tinian Island, one of the Marianas Islands located in the Pacific. He was assigned as co-pilot on a B-29 Bomber.
The B-29 carries a crew of eleven men. Their aircraft, with official tail number 913, was given the name "Thundering Loretta" by the crew.
Ronald and his crew were scheduled a mission for the 20th of May, 1945. It was a late mission so the crew slept in. When they woke, they ate a leisurely meal and then reported for their pre-flight briefing. The briefing completed, the men went to "Loretta." They performed their pre-flight and prepared for takeoff. Master switches on, engines turned over in proper rotation, everything by the numbers, eveything perfectly normal. They took their place in line for takeoff and slowly advanced toward the active runway. Finally they rolled onto the active, turned into the wind, and began their takeoff roll. The B-29 was heavy, for they were fully loaded with bombs and mines for their mission.
The official record showed that Army Air Corps B-29 Tail Number 913 made a total of seven missions against the Japanese mainland. Their standing mission had been to bomb the mainland with their full load of bombs and then, upon the return, drop mines into the shipping lanes of the Straight of Japan.
On their eighth mission, on Sunday, May 20th, 1945, at approximately 1830 hours, their aircraft failed to attain flight speed and crashed, exploding on take-off. Their was only one survivor, the tail gunner. All other crew members were killed.
Ronald was buried on Tinian Island until the end of the war. Then, at the request of his family, his body was disinterred and returned to his home in Pensacola. He was reburied in Bayview Memorial Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. His tombstone reads: "RONALD H. EDDINS FLORIDA 2D LIEUT 1AAF BOMB SQ WORLD WAR II SEP 29, 1923 - MAY 20, 1945."

She was born 29 February, 1928 and died 01 February, 2008 in Pensacola, Florida. Argie Mae HARRIS was a leap-year baby. Her birth was reported as 1930 but that was not a leap year. I have used the previous leap year 0f 1928 in my family file, however, it could well be another year entirely. Need verification.

Ronald Hilton EDDINS was born 21 July, 1945 in Pensacola, Florida. He married (1) Karen Elizabeth SMITH on 21 July,1969 in Sheffield, Alabama. Karen, the adopted daughter of Odell McCollouh SMITH and Eloise BOTELER, was born 26 June, 1949 in Birmingham, Alabama. He married (2) Patricia Ann XIFO on 20 July, 2004 in Cottonwood, Arizona. Patricia Ann XIFO, daughter of Anthony XIFO and Sara ENZOR, was born 11 September, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York.
Ronald Hilton EDDINS was born at Baptist Hospital, Pensacola, Florida. He lived with his parents on Paine Road in Navy Point, Warrington, a suburb of Pensacola. His father was drafted into military service less than a year after Ronald's birth and Ronald, his older sister Barbara and his mother moved in with her husband's parents at 1203 North Green Street, Brownsville, Florida. Ronald and his older sister Barbara lived there until George M. EDDINS, Jr. returned from military service.
When George, Jr. got out of the Army their new home at 2 Sulu Drive, Warrington was completed and they moved there, where they resided for the rest of their lives.
Ronald joined the Army on 2 August, 1963. He served in various assignments until his discharge on 10 September, 1967, after which he returned to his home in Warrington.
Ronald married Karen Elizabeth SMITH on 26 June, 1969. Born Nell CHANDLER, after birth Nell was put up for adoption in Montgomery, Alabama. She was adopted by Odell and Eloise SMITH and renamed Karen Elizabeth SMITH. Her adoptive parents informed her when she was quite young that she was adopted but she never had any interest in finding her biological parents until after the death of her adoptive parents.
Ronald and Karen moved into a rental apartment on Waycross Avenue off Gulf Beach Highway. Ronald was working as a reserve Deputy Sheriff, and times were tough financially. In January, 1970, after finding out that Karen was expecting, Ronald rejoined the Army.
Ronald spent twenty more years in the service of his country, finally retiring in May, 1987 as a First Sergeant. Ronald and Karen returned to her home in Sheffield, Alabama.
Ronald began working at various jobs, finally becoming a Produce Manager with the Jitney Jungle Supermarkets. He worked for them until they closed their stores in 1997. Needing work, Ronald transferred over to the local Wal-Mart Super Center located in Florence, Alabama, where he worked as a Produce Clerk.
In the late 1980's Karen became interested in finding her real parents. She was quite fortunate in that she found her biological mother very quickly. Apparently her mother had given birth out of wedlock and the times dictated she give up her baby. Her real mother was Betty Joyce CHANDLER, now married to William McGUIRE. They reside in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Karen's real father is still unknown. Karen has several half-brothers and sisters.
Ronald and Karen had marital problems, and Ronald left his family in March of 1999, returning to his family's home in Warrington, Florida. Karen filed for divorce, which was finalized in 2002. Karen remained in her house until the home was repossessed for default on the mortgage in 2002.
Ronald remained in Pensacola until August, 1999, when he moved to Lagrangeville, New York, where his fiance Patricia Ann XIFO-HOMON lived. Ronald and Patricia were married on 20 Juiy, 2004 in Cottonwood, Arizona.
Patricia Ann XIFO was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents moved to Bedford Hills, N.Y. when she was five years old. They lived in the same house at 8 Sunset Drive until her mother sold the house in 1996. Patricia graduated Monmouth College (now Monmouth University) in January 1976 with a BA in Art Education. She later graduated from the Marist College Paralegal Program in February 2000.
