ii. Absalom DIXON, b. abt. 1765 in Pitt County, NC.

Generation 4

Jeremiah DIXON was born about 1764 in Pitt County, North Carolina and died 26 July 1835 in Andalusia, Alabama. He married Elizabeth GOFF on 10 Aug 1785 in Pitt County, North Carolina.  Elizabeth GOFF was born about 1765 in North Carolina and died 15 Jun 1840 in Andalusia, Covington County, Alabama.
Jeremiah DIXON was a pensioner of the American Revolution, volunteering for service in 1778 and serving as a Private. In his pension claim, Jeremiah stated that he volunteered for the Continental Army in 1778, initially for a period of six months.  He fought in several battles, including the one at Briar Creek. In April of 1781 he re-enlisted for another year of service. He was present in the engagement  with the British at Eutaw Springs, South Carolina, which was the last major battle fought in the South. He served at various times with the North Carolina Troops under Captains George Falconer, Thomas Armstrong and Anthony Sharp, Majors Reading Blount and Thomas Donoho, and Colonel Archibald Lytle. He also served under  Colonels William Washington and Lee. He was in the battles of Briar Creek in Georgia and Eutaw Springs and Dorchester in South Carolina. He was discharged on May 13, 1784 at Salisbury, North Carolina after having served a total of 18 months.
If all the above is true, Jeremiah must have been between 17 and 21 years old during his service. He was a resident of Pitt County, NC during his service years.
Jeremiah DIXON and Elizabeth GOFF were married on 10 August, 1785. Jeremiah was twenty-one years old at the time. Jeremiah and Elizabeth lived in Pitt County until 1815. He appears to have obtained 274 acres of land in Richmond County, North Carolina as a result of his Revolutionary War service, however, there is no record of him having ever occupied this property.
It appears that Jeremiah and Elizabeth GOFF left their home in North Carolina in 1815 for the Mississippi Territory. They were most likely motivated by the "Alabama Fever"  which was raging at the time. Regardless, Jeremiah, along with his son-in-law, Reubin DIAMOND (husband of his daughter Elizabeth) made the decision to move together. They most likely traveled along the Federal Road leading through Georgia to Fort Mitchell in Alabama. From there they continued to follow the route southwest past Montgomery until finally arriving in Monroe County. Jeremiah and his family are indeed listed on the 1816 census for Monroe County.
On December 19, 1823, Jeremiah purchased land in the Conecuh River Township along the banks of the Conecuh River. His daughter Elizabeth and her husband Reubin DIAMOND settled on land adjacent to theirs. They were at Pea Ridge, which was on the west side of Copeland Creek, about two miles  north of the Conecuh River. This site was located about one and a half miles southeast of the current community of Fairfield. Their location was ideal in that it linked the families with the Montezuma and Brooklyn communities. They had access to these places through the Indian trails and the Conecuh River. By the time of his death in 1835, Jeremiah and his family had acquired several hundred acres in the area. They were some of the earliest families to settle in the new Covington County, joining the other families of John E. Sentell, William Bass, and Hollond M. Hogg. In all there were some twenty-five families settled here by 1825.
Jeremiah made application for his Revolutionary War pension on 25 March, 1834. Unfortunately, he passed away before the evidence could be reviewed and the pension approved. Pension Certificate No. 33171 was issued on September 16, 1853 to his survivng heirs; rate $40.00 per annum, ending July 26, 1835 (Act of June 7, 1832, Mobile, Alabama Agency). His pension was paid to his widow Elizabeth, sons Seth P., Rufus Wiley, Jeremiah, Jr., John B., and daughter Elizabeth DIAMOND.
Jeremiah passed away on 26 July, 1835, and was buried at Montezuma, Covington County, Alabama. His wife Elizabeth must have lived past 1853, as she was one of the recipients of his Revolutionary War pension. According to a surviving relative, both Jeremiah and Elizabeth were buried in unmarked graves on the banks of the Conecuh River close to where their home was.

Children of Jeremiah DIXON and Elizabeth GOFF are: (Generation 5)

Elizabeth L. DIXON was born on 26 May 1793 in Pitt County, North Carolina and died sometime after 1854. She married Reubin DIAMOND about 1822 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Reubin DIAMOND, son of William DIAMOND and Ann ?,  was born in South Carolina about 1790 and died 7 October, 1853 in Covington County, Alabama. She remarried a ? DIWOOD, born about 1790, after Reubin DIAMOND's death. Elizabeth, Reubin DIAMOND, and her father, Jeremiah DIXON, left their home in North Carolina in 1815 for the Mississippi Territory. Elizabeth and Reubin settled at Pea Ridge on the west side of Copeland Creek, only a few miles from the Conecuh River.
Elizabeth and Reubin DIAMOND bought 80 acres of land in 1823, and added an additional 160 acres to their farm in 1836 and 1837. They became leaders in their community, even holding the 1825 district elections in their home. The community center was later built near their house. The censuses of 1840, 1850 and 1860 all indicate Reubin owned one slave. Reubin and Elizabeth reared eight children, living out their lives in the area.

Children of Elizabeth L. DIXON and Reubin DIAMOND are: (Generation 6-2)
                              i. William DIAMOND, b. abt. 1824 in AL. m. Ann Eliza ?.

Sophrina DIXON was born 23 August, 1795 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Her first name may have been spelled "Sophronia." She must have died sometime before 1853, as she was not named as a recipient of her father's Revolutionary War pension.

Rufus Wiley Bonaparte DIXON was born 17 November 1797 in Pitt County, North Carolina and died in 1872.  He married Elsie Permelia MAY on 27 December, 1825 in Conecuh County, Alabama.  Elsie, the daughter of James David MAY, was born on 11 July, 1807 in South Carolina and died November 1880 in Dixie, Alabama.
Rufus Wiley Bonaparte DIXON and his family came from North Carolina in the early 1820's. Wiley, as he preferred to be called, didn't care for his first name, "Rufus." Some family notes say he did have his name officially changed to Wiley Bouregard DIXON, but this is unconfirmed.
Wiley became a Captain in the 8th Brigade, 4th Division of the Alabama Militia between 1822 and 1826. He proved to be a capable and efficient leader, and as such, he was appointed to hold the very first election in Covington County. That election was held in 1825, and he held it in his sister's house (Elizabeth L. DIXON and husband Reubin DIAMOND). There were 35 people casting votes.
Wiley married Elsie Permelia MAY on 27 December, 1825. They set up home in Dixie, Alabama. In 1837 he purchased 40 acres of land in the Carolina Township, and later in 1854 he bought an additional 40 acre-tract in the Conecuh River Township and 80 acres in the Rome community. There he farmed, and later built and operated a sawmill..
In 1870, Wiley and Elsie were living south of the Conecuh River near the town of Dixie,  which was along the line between Covington County and the newly formed Escambia County. Apparently Wiley had some difficulties with the Escambia County officials, so he requested of the state legislature.... and was granted.... citizenship in Covington County.
Wiley passed away a couple of years later, in 1872, and he was buried in the Dixon family cemetery located on his property in Escambia County. The site of his former home is now the Dixon Forestry Center which was given to Auburn University by his descendants. Elsie Permelia MAY passed away in November of 1880 and was buried at Louis Hart's place near Dixie, Alabama. Wiley and Elsie lived long and prosperous lives, and together they reared 14 children.

Jeremiah DIXON, Jr. moved to Alabama with his family in 1816 when he was about 15 years old. After his father settled in Covington County circa 1822, Jeremiah Jr. lived with his parents. He stayed on there with them even after he married. In the years between 1835 and 1837 he was able to purchase 240 acres of land located near his parent's farm.
On the 1840 Covington County census there is a household for Jeremiah DIXON, Jr. and his wife, with six sons and three daughters. Unfortunately, he died circa 1848 and left his wife a widow, with six of the children still living at home. The 1850 Covington County census listed Margaret as "Head of Household" and all of the children were still with her. Margaret was appointed Postmaster of the Andalusia Post Office on September 21, 1868.

In 1828 he married Sirena LILES, daughter of pioneers Sherrod and Rebecca LILES of the Loango community.  With his maturity and leadership qualities it was inevitable that John Bonaparte become a leader and public servant to his community, and so it was. In 1834 he was appointed prosecutor for the county circuit court. Records show he apprehended and prosecuted a horse thief. In 1844 he was appointed Sheriff and Coroner of Covington County, one of only three coroners prior to 1872. These services were rendered when the county seat was in Montezuma, before it was moved to Andalusia.
John Bonaparte was listed in the 1840 Covington County census, and again in the 1850 census. In the 1860 census he and his family were reported as living in Andalusia, AL. Two of these censuses report John as being born in South Carolina; however, most reports indicate that Pitt County was one of the borderline counties that showed up on both sides of the state line occcasionally. On the 1840 census John Bonaparte was reported as owning two slaves. On the 1850 census he possessed three slaves.
In 1850 John Bonaparte and his family, along with his brother Seth's family, were among the very few residing in the new village of Andalusia. It was about this time that John Bonaparte became co-owner and incorporator with A.G. Mallett, of the Covington County Company. In 1852 John Bonaparte operated a general store on the south side of the town square. He sold it the same year to John W. JONES, because he had different desires. Land. In 1854 John Bonaparte purchased 40 acres norht of the town square. He had already bought 160 acres at the foot of Devereux Hill. It was not long before he psosessed more than 500 acres of prime property in and around Covington County.
In 1862 there was a small set back in his plans. The War between the States! John Bonaparte was old when the war broke out, being 59 years old, yet he volunteered to serve. On August 27, 1862 he enlisted as a Private in Company A of the Covington County Reserves, Confederate Army. He served in Captain George W. Kierce's company. He was still being reported on the muster roll for his company on 26 September, 1865. John Bonaparte and Sirena had three sons serve in this war, and two of them were casualties of it.
John Bonaparte DIXON's life ended in 1873 at the age of 69. He was buried beside his wife Sirena in the Baisden lot of Magnolia Cemetery in Andalusia, Alabama.

David Lafayette was buried in Mason, Alabama. Sofia's first name has been spelled in some records as "Sohia." David Lafayette's sister Victoria DIXON married a George LOVELACE. It is entirely possible that George and Sofia were relatives.

William H. DIXON was born 08 April 1829 and died about 1864.

Permelia Ann DIXON was born 29 April 1830 in Alabama and died 14 October 1822 in Santa Rosa County, Florida. Permelia Ann DIXON's alternate name from some sources was "Pamela Amelia."  Her death date has controversy as well, with various family documents reporting 14 October, 1882; 17 May 1883; and January 20, 1903. As her husband William D.J. COLLINS remarried to Sarah Lagrande Compton ETHERIDGE before 1893 when he died, and it can be assumed that he and Permelia Ann were married until her death, the 1903 date can safely be eliminated. Permelia Ann was a first cousin of Mary Lenora CLEMENTS-COLLINS. Permelia Ann married William Decatur Josephus COLLINS in about 1848. He was the son of John COLLINS and Mahala HOUSTON, and he was born about 1822 in North Carolina and died 18 March 1893. Both He and Permelia Ann are buried in Milton, Florida.
