DAVIS

Patriarch : John Henry DAVIS and descendents

Generation 1

John Henry DAVIS was born about 1897 in Alabama and died in about1954. He married Pearl Creary COLLINS in about 1918 in Northwest Florida. Pearl, the daughter of Robert COLLINS and Terry CRAIN, was born on 6 September, 1899 in Milton, Florida and died on 2 April, 1937 in Jasper, Texas.
The 1930 Census for Louisiana, Grant County, Ward 2; Enumeration District 22-5; Supervisor District 5; Sheet 1B, shows a John H. (Henry) DAVIS, white male, head-of-household, renting at $4.00 per month, and not living on a farm. He was 33 years old in 1930; 21 at marriage. He did not attend any schools in 1929-1930, but could speak, read and write English. He was born in Alabama. Both his father and mother were born in North Carolina. He was employed in a Gravel Pit as a Steam Shovel Engineer (Crane operator). He was not reported as having been a veteran. His wife, Pearl C. (Creary) COLLINS-DAVIS, was a white female, 31 years old; 19 at marriage. She was born in Florida. Her father and mother were born in North Carolina. Johnnie P. (Pearl) DAVIS, their daughter, was a white female, age 6, born in Louisiana. Her father (John Henry DAVIS) was born in Alabama and her mother (Pearl Creary COLLINS-DAVIS) was born in Florida. Kathleen, the youngest daughter, was a white female, age 3, and also born in Louisiana.
John Henry DAVIS was either full-blooded Indian or a half-breed, according to his daughter, Johnnie Pearl DAVIS-EDDINS. She was not sure of his tribal affiliation but thought he was originally from the mid-Florida region. That would make him most likely of Seminole blood. Also, according to Johnnie Pearl, he was a heavy equipment operator (Crane?), and that was what he was doing in Louisiana when he left them. She believed he had died in New Orleans sometime in the mid-fifties.
In the mid 1930's Pearl Creary COLLINS-DAVIS came to Texas with her two daughters, Johnnie Pearl DAVIS and Kathleen (NMI) DAVIS, to be near her family there. She was without her husband, John Henry DAVIS, and no explanation was given as to why. It is known that John Henry DAVIS had been a Steam Shovel Engineer at that time and was employed in Louisiana.
Regardless, Pearl Creary and her daughters lived near Hemphill for a while. It was while picking blackberries near their home that she pricked her finger on a briar and developed blood poisoning too severe to cure with the medicines of that time. She died in the Jasper County Hospital in April of 1937 and was buried in Burkeville cemetery, Burkeville, Texas.
Johnnie Pearl and Kathleen lived with their Aunt Chip (Chipley Adams COLLINS-ENZOR-JACKSON, Pearl Creary's sister)) in Newton, TX until the were old enough to take care of themselves. They eventually moved to Pensacola, FL to be near where their mother was born.

Children of JOHN DAVIS and PEARL COLLINS are: (GENERATION 2)
                              i. Johnnie Pearl DAVIS, b. 04 Jul 1924, Forrest Hills, LA; d. 22 Jan 2007, Pensacola, FL.
ii. Kathleen (NMI) DAVIS, b. 29 Dec 1926, Cravens, LA; d. 08 Mar 1991, Pensacola, FL.

Generation 2

Johnnie Pearl DAVIS was born on 4 July, 1924 in Forrest Hills, Louisiana, and died on 22 January, 2007 in Pensacola, Florida. She married George Martin EDDINS, Jr. on 6 March, 1944 in Pensacola, Florida. George Jr., the eldest son of George Martin EDDINS, Sr. and Clara Mae JACKSON, was born on 11 March, 1917 in Parker Springs, Alabama and died on 28 July, 1991 in Pensacola, Florida.
Johnnie Pearl DAVIS (Johnnie) was born on Independence Day, July 4, 1924, in Forrest Hills, Louisiana.
The 1930 Census for Grant County (?), Louisiana, Ward 2; Enumeration District 22-5; Supervisor District 5; Sheet 1B shows a John H. (Henry) DAVIS, white male, head-of-household, renting at $4.00 per month, not living on a farm. He was 33 years old in 1930, 21 at marriage. He did not attend any schools in 1929-1930, but could speak, read and write english. He was born in Alabama; his father and mother both born in North Carolina. He was employed in a Gravel Pit as a Steam Shovel Engineer. He was not reported as having been a veteran. His wife, Pearl C. (Creary) DAVIS, was a white female, 31 years old; 19 at marriage. She was born in Florida; with both her father and mother born North Carolina. Johnnie P. (Pearl) DAVIS, oldest daughter, was a white female, age 6, born in Louisiana, with father born in Alabama and mother born in Florida. Kathleen, the youngest daughter, was a white female, age 3, also born in Louisiana.
Johnnie and her young sister were raised in Newton, Texas by their Aunt, Chipley Adams COLLINS-ENZOR-JACKSON, their mother's sister, after their mother died from blood poisoning. Johnnie attended Rosepine High School in Rosepine, Louisiana.
Johnnie and Kathleen eventually moved back to the Pensacola area when they reached the age of maturity to be close to family there. Johnnie became the responsible adult for her younger sister during their early years. Upon arrival in Pensacola, Johnnie decided to enroll in nursing school there.
Johnnie married George Martin EDDINS, Jr. on 6 March 1944. They had met while she was attending Nursing School in Pensacola, Florida and he was driving an ambulance for Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home. A coincidence: George, Jr. was born in a boxcar at Parker Springs, Alabama where George's father was working for the Railroad. His delivery was performed by Dr. Olin Oliver ENZOR, who it would eventually be discovered was a relative of Johnnie's. That was shortly before Dr. Enzor moved to Burkeville, TX.
George Martin Eddins, Jr. ( known as George, Jr.) was born in Parker Springs, Alabama. George, Jr. weighed 10 lbs 11 oz at birth. His father was a Railroad Superintendent and was laying track in the area. Parker Springs was not a town, but a water supply area for the trains. George's father and mother lived in two boxcars that were provided to them by the railroad for shelter while on track-laying duty. George, Jr. was born in one of the boxcars.
George Jr. was a well behaved, serious minded boy. The only record of arrest or conviction was an incident on 1 Jan 1934, when he was 16 years old. He was arrested for shooting fireworks in the downtown Pensacola business district. The case was dismissed in City Court.
George Jr. began his career in Aviation at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola in 1938. He spent his entire career there except for a brief stint of military service.
George Jr. married Elizabeth Ann BURKE about 1942. He and Elizabeth Ann had one child, a daughter named Patricia Ann (Patsy). The marriage did not work out and they were divorced on 8 July 1942.
George Jr. married Johnnie Pearl Davis in 1944. They had met while George Jr. was driving an ambulance for Waters & Hibbert funeral home and Johnnie Davis was attending nursing school. It would coincidentally show they had more in common than first imagined: George Jr.'s father, George, Sr. had worked for the railroad when George, Jr. was born. Years later it would come out in a conversation with George Sr. that the doctor that had delivered George Jr. was Dr. Olin Oliver Enzor, a relative of Johnnie Davis'. That was shortly before Dr. Enzor moved to Burkeville, TX.
George M. EDDINS, Jr. enlisted in the U.S. Army on 5 September, 1946 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia. His service number was RA 14-147-169. His education level was reported as four years of high school and his marital status was "married." His last assignment was with the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM with work assignments on the Manhattan Project. He was separated on 15 February, 1948 with the rank of Technician Fifth Grade (TEC 5).
George Jr. returned to Pensacola and his growing family after separation form the Army. He returned to his job in Civil Service at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, where he spent 34 years of faithful service (1938-1972) before retiring in 1972.
George Jr. and Johnnie Pearl had four children together; one girl (Barbara Lea) and three boys (Ronald Hilton, Gary Lynn, and Stephen Lane). Johnnie and George lived a good life together.
George Jr. died in 1991 at age 74 from complications arising from Aortic Aneurism surgery, compounded by cancer of the lungs. His military service qualified him for burial at Barrancas National Cemetery located on Pensacola Naval Air Station, the place where he had spent most of his adult life. It was fitting that he would also spend eternity there.
Johnnie passed away on 22 January, 2007, and was cremated as specified in her own burial arrangements. Her name was inscribed on the reverse of the tombstone of George Martin EDDINS, Jr., but her ashes were not placed in the grave. They were given to her son Gary Lynn to be returned to the home she had lived in for most of her life.

George's tombstone reads: "GEORGE MARTIN EDDINS, JR. TEC 5, U.S. ARMY WORLD WAR II MAR 11, 1917- JUL 28, 1991."

Obituary column in the Pensacola News Journal Tuesday, July 30, 1991: Well-known square and round dance teacher, choreographer dies at 74, by Michele Kurtz: "George Eddins knew how to get people on the dance floor. He just showed them how much fun they'd have. The world-reknowned square and round dance teacher and choreographer died Sunday. He was 74. Mr. Eddins, a Pensacola native, was instrumental in organizing and promoting square and round dancing locally, his friends and relatives said."

Kathleen met and married Aime Noel Casavant in about 1948. He was in the Navy, stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station, when they met.
Aime Noel CASAVANT ("Cass") died only a few months before Kathleen. He died on 20 January, 1991 and she passed away on 8 March of the same year. She died at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola after a month of severe pain. They were both cremated and their ashes interred at Barrancas National Cemetery on the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, Plot # 35 2148-B.

Karen, the daughter of Odell McCollough SMITH and Eloise BOTELER, was born on 26 June, 1949 in Birmingham, Alabama. He married (2) Patricia Ann XIFO-HOMON on 20 July, 2004 in Cottonwood, Arizona. Patricia, the daughter of Anthony Aurillio XIFO and Sara Elizabeth ENZOR, was born on 11 September, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York.
Ronald was born at Baptist Hospital, Pensacola, Florida. He lived with his parents on Paine Road in Navy Point, Warrington, a suburb of Pensacola. His father, George Martin Eddins, Jr, was drafted into military service less than a year after Ronald's birth and Ronald, his older sister Barbara and his mother moved in with her husband's parents at 1203 North Green Street, Brownsville. Ronald and his older sister Barbara lived there until their father returned from military service.
When George, Jr. got out of the Army their new home at 2 Sulu Drive, Warrington was completed and they moved there, where they resided for the rest of their lives.
Ronald spent his childhood in Warrington. He attended Elementary and Junior High School there, then went on to High School at Pensacola Technical High, where he majored in electronics.

Her adoptive parents informed her when she was quite young that she was adopted but she never had any interest in finding her biological parents until after the death of her adoptive parents. In the late 1980's she started her search. She was quite fortunate in that she found her biological mother very quickly. Apparently her mother had given birth out of wedlock and the times dictated she give up her baby. Her real mother was Betty Joyce Chandler, now married to William McGuire. They reside in Scranton, PA. Karen's real father is still unknown. Karen has several half-brothers and sisters.
Karen lived with her adopted parents at her Sheffield, AL address until she married Ronald Hilton Eddins in 1969.
After their marriage they moved into a rental apartment on Waycross Avenue off Gulf Beach Highway. Ronald, who was working as a Deputy Sheriff at the time, found times tough financially and when, shortly after their marriage, Karen found herself pregnant, he rejoined the Army.
Ronald went back in the service on January 2, 1970 and spent twenty more years in the service of his country, finally retiring in May, 1987 as a First Sergeant. Ronald and Karen returned to her home in Sheffield, Alabama. Karen had inherited the family home upon the death of her mother in 1985.
Ronald began working at various jobs, finally becoming a Produce Manager with the Jitney Jungle Supermarkets. He worked for them until they closed their stores in 1997. Needing work, Ronald transferred over to the local Wal-Mart Super Center located in Florence, Alabama, where he worked as a Produce Clerk.
Ronald and Karen had marital problems, and Ronald left his family in March of 1999, returning to his family's home in Warrington, Florida. Karen continued to live alone in her family home until the house was reposessed for default on mortgage payments in 2002.
Ronald remained in Warrington until August, 1999, when he moved to Lagrangeville, New York, where Patricia Ann XIFO-HOMON lived.
Patricia Ann XIFO was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents moved to Bedford Hills, N.Y. when she was five years old. They lived in the same house at 8 Sunset Drive until her mother sold the house in 1996. Patricia graduated Monmouth College (now Monmouth University) in January 1976 with a BA in Art Education. She later graduated from the Marist College Paralegal Program in February 2000. Patricia was divorced from Kevin Earl HOMON in May, 2001.
